Liveaboard>To know everything>Mergui
In 1997 Myanmar (Burma) was opening up to foreigners for the first time in over fifty years. Starting from Kawthaung the Mergui Archipelago (South of Burma) has been left largely alone and today it is an area of some mystery. Innumerable islands remain unexplored, and the region presents the possibility of thousand of exciting new dive sites. Most of the best diving is conducted on the open ocean sites, in deeper water, around submerged pinnacles and rocky islets, as well as the already famous Burma Banks. The greatest area attraction is diving with numerous sharks and pelagic fishes... and many species of rays and small creatures rarely seen in Thailand can be observed. An other fascinate side of Mergui Archipelago is the hundreds islands, islets and outcrops themselves; many of the larger ones boasting glorious beaches fringed by rich mangroves and with streams flowing down from the elevated land. They are virtually uninhabited then, there is no development on any of the islands apart a few small sea gypsy villages and occasional military post. Wildlife is profuse, with Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea Eagles circling in contention for fish. Over the primary rainforest small green parakeets are common and Wreathed, Pied and Great Hornbills frequently patrol the skies.
